So What Is Personal Development?
Personal development consists of activities that:
- develop a person’s capabilities and potential
- build human capital
- facilitate employability
- and enhance quality of life
- and the realization of dreams and aspirations.
While we all have some talent (yes, even you), we don’t always know what it is. We may have some ability in a particular field but mistake that for our talent. Just because you can sing in the shower does not mean that you have a voice that others want to listen to, sorry!
So personal development is where you engage in activities to learn and try many different things. This is how to discover more about yourself and what you can really do. It also will show you where you don’t have talent or abilities. For myself, mountain climbing, singing and acting are all activities I need to avoid.
If you are in employment then you are only using those skills that you need for the job in hand. Maybe you have landed your dream job and are very happy with it. That is great!
But what about the other aspects of your life? Relationships, body image, self-confidence, ability to make friends, learning new skills? Unless you actively work on these you are just drifting along. The trouble with just drifting is that you don’t really develop the full potential of anything then you may wonder why things are not working out as you desire them to be.
